This REQUIRES (Greg Robbins') Folder Icon Maker 1.1, or "FIM", availible on various BBS's, etc.
Version 1.1 supports changes in base folder icon, and his note describes how to modify the base-folder resources, adjust the "SHFT" resource (for placements), and so on, and is very helpful. He included 3 res files, for "Violet Floppy", "Gray Floppy", and "Green Gradient Folder" base "folder" icons. I have added "Jerry's Folder.2 Folder" (from "Jerry’s Sys7 Folders", also availible on BBS's) as it caught my eye. I generally use icons from Drew Hodgson & Vernon Brown's large collection of 3D/CFI's ("3D Color Folder Icons", and likewise availible), but it is nice to be able to cook up a special stand-out folder icon for some special use now and then, and FIM 1.1 provides just the means to do so. If my Sys 7(point O, Tuna 1.1.1) can ever handle floppy icons without going ape, I hope to make some good use of these too. Someday.
FIM 1.1 allows you to select a (preset) resource file to use for the base icon, but you have to open it (FIM) each time. For "the odd time," this is fine. But for those who have the space and inclination to set up some "factory work" machinery, you can make a copy of FIM (1.1) for each base icon, paste the appropriate res file in, adjust 'SHFT' if needed, and just drag 'n drop like a maniac. I like to keep such things handy at least, for the "even times," when you want to chase a few crazy ideas around.
Included are:
(1) The base icons are pasted on ResEd files, for easy Finder Copy/Paste.
(2) A cooked up FIM version, which you can paste onto the appropriate "machine" (ie, modified FIM - to override the standard Finder icon without having to fool with the Finder Desktop info, etc).
(3) The Resource (base icon) files, even if already in FIM 1.1 (just 3K files), for "completeness" of the package (but you do need to get FIM 1.1 if you don't have it yet).
(4) Some samples of each. The suffix "|.r" denotes an icon (on ResEd file), while Naming Conventions use "ƒ" for folder, and "f" for floppy (disk icon) in names. I'd probably use "v" for volume if I had any hard drive/partition icons in there, too. If the name ENDS with "ƒ" it is a folder, not an icon. If it ends in "f" either I goofed or we got a garbled transmission in there somewhere.
(5) A seperate folder of "Combo's" which shows some of the things you can do if you just go a little crazy in the machine shop. These were all concocted with the materials right at hand, please note(!). Some outstanding possibilities are suggested, methinks, including maybe 3 (+.. ?) levels of "visual linguistics" using distinctive iconic symbols, say.
[I didn't do "Violet Floppy" 'cause it didn't "grab" me that much, and I' got beau coup problems (scrambles) from pasting floppy icons anyway. But it could be a good one for combo's, too. Think of it . . . as "an exercise left to the reader."]
